Luxury Pet Beds

For those of us with pets our four legged friends are simply part of the family. We spoil them and they spoil us in their own special way. We have three unique personalities running around the house, each with their own idiosyncrasies, personal preferences and mischievous tendencies. We’ve learned through trial and error ( and carpet cleaner and paper towels)  what they need and when they need it and certainly we’ve made an attempt to accommodate them whenever possible and with good behavior of course!

“I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love.
For me they are the role model for being alive.”
– Gilda Radner

Over the years my husband and I have certainly struggled with keeping our pets off the furniture. To the point where frankly we gave up and let them have free run of the place and essentially they created their own luxury pet beds. Much to my surprise and over time two small Yorkie and Shitzhu  mixes can do real damage to your furniture. Oddly they always preferred sleeping on the backs of the sofa and chairs in our house if that makes sense. In other words not on the seat cushions but up top where us humans rest our heads. Over time these spots began to sag, discolor and generally resemble the shape of the particular dog that spent so many hours there.

Eventually we replaced our living room set and re-designed the entire room, determined to enforce the “not on the furniture”. An array of unsightly pet beds soon followed in effort to accommodate our pets but certainly these beds did little to compliment the décor. Attempts to hide the beds in a corner, behind furniture etc. proved futile as due to the lightweight nature of these beds our dogs would drag them out into the center of the room or into the kitchen where a tug o war would often ensue.

“We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare.
And in return dogs give us their all. It’s the best deal man has ever made.”
– M. Facklam

In the spring of 2011 the Uttermost Company, an upscale home décor and home furnishings manufacturer introduced a collection of luxury pet beds that eliminate these issues. Uttermost , working with some of the world’s most sought after designers, Carolyn Kinder and Matthew Williams among them, have created a variety of luxury pet beds that not only accommodate man’s best friend but compliment your home décor as well. Wall Décor - Don't Forget to Measure!

Carpenters have an old adage ... "Measure twice, cut once". This mindful advice can also be applied when furnishing your home particularly when purchasing artwork, wall panels or any type of wall décor for that matter. Online shopping can be fun and extremely convenient but sometimes we can be left holding our breath wondering if the item is going to fit nicely in the space we've chosen to display it.

The most common issue we hear from customers is simply, the item I ordered is beautiful, but unfortunately it's too large for my space. When researching and browsing multiple product 4 x 6 images online we can easily lose sight of the fact that once the item arrives it's going to be the full sized version of that scaled down online photo. Take time to measure your space and try to envision not only how the piece might look once displayed , but how the functionality, mobility and flow of the room might change once the item arrives.

Grace Feyock designed Wall Panels
For example, if you are in the market for artwork to enhance that bare, drab wall in the foyer of your home you may want to use your local newspaper and measure and cut the item dimensions out of newsprint then tape or tack them to your wall to get a real feel of how the piece will display, how much of the wall it will consume etc. Wall Panels in-particular often are designed to allow spacing between the panels when hung. Newspaper will allow you to test different options including spacing, offset display, etc. Don't forget to pay close attention to the depth of the artwork. A tight hallway or entryway can cause havoc for you and your guests if the artwork extends several inches from the wall. Thick hardboard wall panels and shadow box style wall decor can invite a shoulder to knock it of it's perch not only damaging the piece but possibly injuring someone.

So when you're online looking for that perfect piece of artwork that's going to instantly transform your space, remember the old carpenter adage and measure twice.....buy once!

Turned Wood Lighting - Classically Elegant

Marilyn Turned Wood Table Lamp
The art of wood turning is a form of woodworking that originated over 3000 years ago, initially by the Egyptians who created a two person lathe whereby one person would turn the wood using a system of ropes while another would carve shapes and objects into the wood using various sharp implements.

In today's high tech world much of the basic principles in wood turning remain constant. Although more modern face plate or spindle lathe systems are now in use along with carbon steel or powdered metal turning tools, a skilled artisan is typically still at the center of the action and the most important element to producing beautiful turned wood lamps. It's the artisans keen eye, steady hand and vision that makes the wood turning process...well, go round.

So what makes these turned wood lamps so great? In addition to the classic, elegant appearance, these lamps are crafted form solid wood , and unlike mass produced machine crafted lighting which are typically made of veneer, the turned wood lamp is crafted from a solid piece of wood and thus will offer years, if not generations of enjoyment. Sedgefield by Adams has been producing turned wood table lamps and turned wood floor lamps since the early 1950's. Their product line features some of the most highly sought after, top quality, and simply gorgeous lighting available in the market today. So if you are looking to give your home décor a boost of confidence then check out these timeless creations.
